Hi all! I was referred to this site by a friend,Bill Carnell, and I must thank him for his good deed.I think it is great and an excellent vehicle to get in touch.Just now while scrolling through the guestbook messages I see one person I worked with at one time. I'll be getting in touch with you "Cato". Now for my particulars: I served in Baden-Soellingen from 1962-66. Pauline and I enjoyed our stay immensely. We enjoyed/appreciated so much it would be impossible to list all the pluses. At the time at Baden-Soellingen I was an air frame tech in 419 Sqdn.;444 Sqdn.;cf-104 Central; Base maintenance;and manpower study. We had and have two sons,Terry and Bruce. Bruce since joined the army element and served four years at Lahr. Pauline and I had the pleasure of visiting him in 1988. What a change in total. Bruce has since retired from the Services. I retired from the Forces in 1986 after 35 years, started my second career three days later and retired after ten years[long enough for a pin and necktie]. If anyone out in the wide blue yonder recognizes Pauline or I we would appreciate a note.Very good friends of ours, Marcel and Fran Legault were in Baden with us.Marcel was a safety systems tech. If anyone knows of them, please let us know. Thanks!

After a hockey game we would go to the PMQ Gasthaus where we would order a bowl of "goulash".
Now after seeing a number of recipes for "goulash" I'm not too sure that is what we had.
Can someone out there help me here. Was it "goulash" or something else. Either way I would
love to have the recipe. Please e-mail it to me. Thanks in advance.

3RCR. I was there from 80-84 with RECCE platoon.Anyone who remembers me or recognizes my name please contact me. I'm trying to find some of my old friends from that era. I have a degree in psychology and work with different types of clients. But that's for now until I get into what I really want to get into (MOVIES). I made my first movie in March and showed it in Seattle. I'm shooting my next movie this week and another one next month. I also perform on stage and I'm doing stand up comedy. I write my own scripts and everything is moving along just great. Would love to hear from some of my pals and see what they are doing with their life.

Hi: I enjoyed your site, however it doesn't go back far enough expect for the description of the leap-frog. My Father was a technician on the leap-frog. However my Mother and I (I was only 4 1/2) were the frist Canadian family, we even beat the leap-frog over, to arrive at 4-Wing. My Dad was in 444 Squadron. While I was young I still remember alot. There were alot of firsts. If anyone is interested I would be glad to tell you.

Hi, everybody, just to send greetings from GERMANY. As a student of FURTWANGEN Engineer School in the late 60th we have been invited by GERMAN ARMY to visit some of our technical installations in the INGOLSTADT-area, near river DANUBE. BUNDESWEHR drove us to F-104 RCAF-AIRFIELD near AUTOBAHN. We entered a waiting LUFTWAFFE NORD 2501/2504 NORATLAS and took of. On the way to plane we passed somewhat like a casino, where Canadians rested, and waves us for departure. We had a safe flight, and enjoyed the short time on your base.

I'd thought it was all a dream until I found this site and saw some familiar names. I served with 3 RCR from 82-84 and I hung around a little after that, but my fondest memories of those years are of the wonderful friends and great parties. Since leaving Germany, I somehow managed to make my way through law school and have gone from a motorcycle riding grunt to a motorcycle riding lawyer working in Toronto. Anyway, those few years in Germany were definitely the very best of times, and I think of them and the friends I met fondly and often. I hope they still have my mug at the Stube!

Thought I would let any Badenites from May 1968 until Dec 1980 know that Larry Gibson (my Dad) passed away on June 29th at the age of 86. Many of the fondest memories of his lifetime were from the twelve years he spent in Baden as the Housing Officer, Community Coordinator, Base Admin Officer and Base Services Officer. He was very involved with the Protestant Chapel and was the executive officer for the Rube Band along with interests in many other clubs. He organized the Winter Carnival for years. He still held his Legion membership with the group in Baden to this day. He and my Mom travelled Europe and Great Britain and knew the area like the back of their hands. Many of their closest friends are ex Badenites. Baden is like home to us as my husband Guy had three postings and my brother Dwight taught at the high school from '79 to '82. I worked at CFNS our last posting there in '85 to '89. Dad and I were in Baden for the closeout, so our history of Baden spans over 25 years. My Mom is doing well and if you would like to contact her feel free to email me.

Hi, I was a brat at 4 wing from 1963 to 1967. It was a great place to be a kid. I remember everyone singing on the bus from the PMQs to the school on the base, rock candy, comic book trading, playing on the bunker in front of our PMQ (33), swinging over the trench in the woods, movies for 25 cents, and just a lot of fun. I also remember trips down the Rhine and beside it, seeing castle ruins every 10 miles or so. When we got back to Canada, found it odd that there were no castles. Dad was Byron "Apps" Appleby, a navigator, and mom was Patricia "Pat". Dad passed away in 1998 and Mom in 1984.

I was a Com tech(a) attached to a mobile unit in Metz and was sent to Baden in 1956 because of a tech shortage there .I was reluctant to go at first but never regretted the great times in 4(F)Wing.Started at base maintenance, working for Sgt.Twit LeBlanc,Then to 414 Sqn.working for Sgt. Bud Murray and finished up at The new 419 Sqn. ,before departing Germany Christmas 1959. Them were glorious days . Does anyone remember the daily "Ironing Board"poker games in the barrick block ?
Great site to all involved.

I arrived at "4 Wing" when everyone still wore blue. G/C Christmas was the CO. His farewell bash was an awsome event. He was replaced by G/C "Buck" McNair. The "rhine parties" were to die for. Der schpielbank [casino], the baths, Iffesheim during the races were only a small part of the charm. My favourite view was from the control tower [my work-site]. I was billeted down from the MIR, adjacent the officers mess. Spare time was spent touring the countryside on my BMW R51 motorcycle on cheap, really cheap gas! DM then [57-59] was about 4.20 to the $Cdn. My first meal at the mess hall was an awesome wienerschnitzel [thought I had died and gone to heaven - all meals were awesome].First big shocker was walking into the shower [first morning there] to see a woman on her knees scrubbing floors "veghetes"[spl]; subsequent shocker was seeing female work-force taking early morning short-cuts through the barracks whenever it rained. First song I learned there goes to the tune of "so long its been good to know you":
I went off to 4 wing and what did I see?
Der Schwann un der Hirsch under gasthause Green Tree - I ordered a sandwich and what did I get? A bottle of cognac but still there's no sweat - singing so long its been good to know you-so long its been good to know you-so long its been good to know you, its been a long time since I've been home & I'll never see 4 wing again.
I wen into Karlsrhue one dark stormy night-went into der Hoffbrau got into a fight-the brawl it was over before it begun-cause the whole yankee army took off on the run, singing sooo long etc..
I'm learning this language and all of its words-this danke schonn bitte schonn is just for the birds-I have to learn English before I leave here, cause all I can burble is danke ein bier, singing sooo long etc...
Must've been over a dozen verses that echo'd down the streets of Huglesheim and along the winding dirt road to the "Huglesheim gate".
Judging from the entries in the guestbook, with a couple of exceptions, no one seems to have been there befor 1960 and the few names/entries of my era are names unfamiliar to be most of my group [excepting base brats] would have to be in their 60's, 70's,80's or gone [or not computer literate]- To those of you who have posted entries thus far, we old guys can also relate. If I had it all to do over again though I certainly would have done it all differently and got more out my time there with those that I worked with and those that I ran with.
Cheers and I hope the few verses I can recall of "The 4 wing song" gave y'all cause to chuckle.

I was a kid in 4 (F) Wing, Baden-Baden
from 1957 - 1961. We lived in Bldg 14
and then in Bldg 20. My parents were
F/L (later S/L) Jack and Billie Regan.
My dad was a Sabre pilot in 444 Sqn.
I have an older sister Sandra and a younger brother David and an even younger sister Sheila. All my siblings are well. However both my parents have
passed away (in the early 1990s).
I would like to hear from anybody who

Hi All, it is such a blast to look through the guest book now and then and see the interest that Badenites still have after all the years. I was in Supply from 78-83. Linda & I raised two kids over there for five great years and enjoyed all the German community activities. Still have friends in Weitenung and get very home sick for the great memories this site generates. Anyone who remembers me, please feel free to drop a line , always love to hear from long lost friends...and Baden was family. Wonderful site, keep up the great work, it is a service we all thoroughly enjoy to come back time after time.

I still think of the base, the P.M.Q,s, the school and the small towns and viiages. The fond memory of the 10 Km bike ride on weekends from Wintersdorf to the base and back.
Well I am living here in Aus making cartoon films with my wife Lorraine. I am hoping to get back to Germany soon and share what is left there with my wife.

Congratulations to a great site. Brings back many fond & foggy memories. I was stationed at 4 Wing from 1963-1968, single of course, but married a Navy girl Dora Gallant when we returned to Canada. We have three boys and now a few grandkids. I worked primarily in the Avionics Labs for my entire tour with many side trips to Decci, never did get SAF duty though and I won't tell why. Single guys had first "Choice" to Decci you know. After moving out of barracks I lived in Plittersdorf above the Rhinelust Gasthaus. Great times. I too remember the train rises, rhine cruises, Munich October Fests, many, many beer tents, my first ride in a 104 and many other events to numerous to mention. I got out in 1968 and went to work for Honeywell in their computer division. I think we transferred across the country more in Honeywell than in the service. Have kept in touch with a few old friends but would like to hear from more. I currently own a small Wine and Beer making supplies shop, guess where I acquired the taste from.

Hi there. I learned about this site from Karen Webber. I was in Baden from 1982 to 1985 and it feels like we came home yesterday. We seem to guage our timelines in my family as before Germany and after Germany. My sister Tawna and brother Brendan also live here in Ottawa. Would love to hear from anyone from those years. Does anyone know where Leisa Blackwell, Sheri Russell or Trisha Spooner is????
Cheers.

Hi.I was stationed in Baden 63-69 (single)&72-78(with my wife Christine)our daughter Cara was born in Lahr hospital in 73. I was an I.S.Tech & a member of the trumpet&drum band then the Rube band. I remeber the funeral parades for Bruce the Moose and the RCAF I also recall the inaugural parade for 3 mech cdo"Born in a Storm" and we played "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" during the inspection. It almost broke up the parade. I also remember great BBQ parties on the Rhine with 3mekadoo-ers when we lived in Ottersdorf, long weekend beertents at Jffy, and about 12 months TD in Decci where we discovered Vernaccia, Fuoco del Sardegna and who could ever forget Ichnusa, the flattest beer on earth. We have lived in Australia since 79 and I am absolutely stoked to find this page.I hope to get in touch with some of my old buddies. This is a great site. Thank you so very much.Karl"spud"Robson

Great Site, bring back fond memories of Baden, made pull out our photo's. I was stationed in Baden 77 to 81 and in Lahr from 87 to the closure worked in the fire department. I return to see some site in Germany couple of years ago (1999). Had a beer in at the legion in Sollingen, the has changed but still holds the memories of a lot of great times. Can anyone advise me if Mike Hudec is still in the Baden area. I would like to chat with him about old times.

Hi everyone,
My father served in Baden 1CAG from 80-84. I was in grades 5-8 inclusive.
Even though I was 10 when I arrived in Baden, I remember it as though it were yesterday.
I am still very good friends with Tasha Sanford (Ottawa) and Sandra MacKinnon (here with me)
but I often wonder what happened to many of my other friends from School: Leisa Blackwell,
Sheri Russell, Diane Menard, Gilbert Stuckless. I have such vivid and fond memories of Baden.
I still gage everything from when we "came home". It makes me sad to think that so much of
the base is gone or in disrepair. The pictures were great to see. Although the "new Q's" were
not there when I was and I feel sad to think that the field is gone where I did all those Canada
Fitness tests. If anyone out there remembers me, Drop a line. Take care.

Great web site! Stumbled upon it through the Air Force Association web site. Stationed Lahr, at 5AMU, from 82-86. Travelled to Baden a lot as had old friends in PPCLI, and 1GAG. Remember the spectacular hockey games between the Raiders and other units, more so with those VanDoos (LOL). Came back to Canada to Cold Lake, 410 Sqn. Jumped to the other side of the fence, in 92. This site sure brings back some fond thoughs, best posting in my career! Anybody from 5AMU, please contact me, would like to hear from you. Anybody know where Tom Brown is, 3CDO, went to 1PPCLI in 74? Also the where CWO Earl Basaraba is, used to be my platoon Sgt. in D Coy, 1PPCLI, 1973? Best wishes in the new year to all. PROST!!!!!

Fond memories of school and the marvelous chance to experience my teen
years, great school, wonderful teachers,
and even after being back so long,
still miss the learning knowledge and
how fortunate I was. Freelancing as
a photographer between Toronto and
New York, but will and want to revisit
my teenage and very impressionable years
It was something I cherish everyday.
Missed reunion, hope to get to the next
one. Please feel free to email.
