The idea of producing this website is pure genius! My name is Dwaine Miller and I was a Baden base brat from 1975-1979 and those four years were probably the the most memorable and probably the best years of my life(with the exception of my daughter being born. Congratulations on an excellent website!!

Really enjoyed your site and planing to return often. Was at 4(F) Wing 1960-64. Worked in NPF (Accounts Section), was in
the band 1961-64 and lived in Soellingen. We visited the area in Jun 98. It was a dissapointment as so many
things had changed. Would love to hear from anyone stationed there in those years.

Wow! That was TOO weird! We returned to the base formerly known as Baden today for the 1st time since it closed. The mixture of deserted buildings and abandoned HAS, bunkers and "submarines" painted green, and new or renewed and freshly-painted commericial enterprises is almost surreal. Where the CANEX buildings-Coffee Shop, Theatre, Grocery Store, Main Store, Book Store-used to be is a huge hole from which will eventually rise an ultramodern glass-and-steel airport terminal. The chapels are gone. CFNS has been taken over by a commercial venture: "Radio 96." The "new" single quarters have new inhabitants, but the Combined Mess clearly lacks for patrons. At least one HAS on the flight line has been painted a brilliant blue, and the control tower stands out from the B40 in white with red and yellow stripes about 1/3 up. Civilian vehicles, bike riders and roller-bladers "litter" the dispersals. At the north dispersal you can enjoy refreshments at the "Flightline Imbiss" while the kids play in the playground near by. The Golf Club is being renovated, and the course was active. The Curling Club has clearly had a new coat of paint. The Shiftung gate has been moved down to the turn, well within the old GRA, the gatehouse to which no longer exists. The Wing Ops parking lots are completely over-grown. The main gate has been relaced by a new commercial structure. The CANEX Garage complex remains deserted. In the Old Qs, the Heating Plant and Shopette are gone, while the Baden Youth Centre stands abanboned-complete with original signs, less the skateboard park. The Old Q's have been renewed with new paint and many flowers that both speak to the contrast between their "permanent" new and transient former inhabitants. Many trees have been cut down, brightening the place considerably. A Rewe supermarket has taken over part of the former school complex. In Huggie, the Grune Baum is no longer grune, but rather a pale pink. You can hit McDonalds before or after shopping at the store formerly known as Esbellas, without moving the car. Downtown Baden-Baden has been redone-the pedestrian zone is much increased, and still rings to the sound of english regardless the absence of Canada plates in the Caracalla Parkplatz. Alte Schloss remains "intact," is still our favourite castle ruin, and the kids had a blast! Despite today's strangeness, we will go back! On base, new street signs proclaim their original Canadian names-perhaps the only enduring symbol of our legacy. Rob & Alice Nash

Colleen and I spent 5 great years in Baden. I was with the Comm Sqn and Colleen spent a couple of years with the Der Kanadier, then on as Base Graphic Artist. Really miss the place (broomball, calling Bingo, etc). Anyone looking for Jack Scott from Comm Sqn '64 to '68 Trumpet in the Rube Band, give me a shout. My Dad and Yvonne are retired out in B.C.

I came across this site while looking for reunions. WOW! Something else. I found a lot of familiar names and relived a lot of memories, all good. I was in Baden in 65 - 67 in the center dispersal then back again in 87 - 91 with 421 Sqn and the PAS. My wife, Shelia, was at the Care-A-Lot for anyone who had kids in daycare.... Anyone who had kids in the Baden Senior High (or were there themselves) should check out www.geocities.com/~hurley/baden for the high school pages and find out about the upcoming student reunion in Winnepeg Aug 2000.

What a great site. Hi to all Baden personnel and esp. the Fire Hall. I was there from 67 to 69 on a short tour. Also played with the Rube Band at that time with Sgt. Bill the director, what a great time that was except for the parades. Returned in 74 to 79 and kept a low profile, stayed away from the band and did a lot of touring. What a great place and great friends. Drop a line if your so inclined.

I lived in 4Wing from when it was practically new (57-62).
We lived in Baden-Baden, PMQs 34/3, 11/1 and 45/12. I attended Rhine Valley Park School grades 2-6.
We were supposed to returned to Canada in Oct/61 by boat but with the Berlin crisis that was delayed until the following April by which time they were flying us home instead.
I can remember being very disappointed.
Some of the best memories of my childhood are from the time spent in Germany. I would love to hear from anyone who was stationed there at that time.

Just happened to stumble on to this site by accident. I was posted in Baden from 1976-1980 and worked at the Base Maint Land Section. My wife, Joan, was the secretary at the Baden SIU section. Was probably the best posting ever. Would like to hear from anyone who remembers us. Would also like to locate Mr Art Gauthier who was the WO in charge of the SIU section in Baden in the late 70's. He eventually retired in Baden and worked as the Base Licensing Officer until the Base closed. As far as I know he remained in Germany and may still be living in Hugelsheim. Does anyone know of his whereabouts?

My family was in Baden from '73 to '77. As a teenager I was certainly fortunate to get overseas and what a great place to go! I have many fond memories, especially since my father wanted to take full advantage of the posting and had us travelling all over the place from as far south as the Canary Islands to as far north as Scotland and many, many sites in between. Anyway, I'm glad this site exists; it will be a great place to visit now and again. My father, for anyone who may remember him, is Don Eastwood (Ret. WO), long since retired on Vancouver Island and enjoying every minute of it.

We have been back in Germany since Aug 97 and have driven past once but never stopped. If there are any big events going on please let us know. Keep up the good work!!!

I was fortunate to spend two tours in Baden with my family. I have a younger sister (Sue) who was born there. We were there 1964-69 and 1974-78. Best nine yearrs of my life. While kids here in Canada were reading about the history, we were touching it. Field trips to all manner of places, most memorable was the first ever trip to London with Newbs' English class. What a blast that was! After I got married (to a serving member of the armed forces, no less) he went to Lahr to augment Fallex, and took leave after it was finished. We met up, and did a little touring. We went to Berlin, after the unification, and got into Switzerland. I must say, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We would go back in a heartbeat. This is a great site, and was surfing Bob Hurley's site a little while ago, and stirred up all kinds of memories. Great job on both. Any BSS grads/faculty feel free to drop a line.

It was great fun to find this page, and to be taken into a bit of a reverie.
I taught English at BSS from 1990 to closure in 1993, when I returned home with my wife Wenche and sons Lars, Erik, and Sven.
We would welcome and reply to any messages from former Badenites, Bavarians, or Barbarians.

I was a dependant whose dad (F/LT A.R.Reed - Nuclear Defense) was stationed in Baden from 1956 to 1960. Many memories of the skeet club, the arena, the judo club, "Hugie", being invited on boar hunts by the locals, deer hunts, Appenwier, the Black Forest... I was last back in 1990 for a quick visit to PMQ 24 by the perimeter fence, looking toward Hügelsheim. One of the boar hunting "high sits" (tree stand) was still there along the treeline! My dad used to wake up the C.O. (Group Captain McNair) the odd time when firing his $18.00 CDN British Jungle Carbine 3.03 at boar(bought war surplus from Britain in 1957), either just after midnight or just before dawn ! Most intense experience while there - we were awakened one night by dad to go out and pick up a boar he had just shot for delivery to the Jehle's (hunting rights owners). As I approached the boar in the pitch black with a flashlight and shone it in his face, he opened his eye and looked at me !! The boar was soon dispatched and a short time later, upon delivery, much pink champagne was opened to toast the spirit of the boar (04:00 hrs.) It was a tough day at school next morning! As young as I was, I didn't want give up the social life both on the base and on the "economy" to come home to Canada at the end of that posting, even with all the advantages afforded me here. We "lived like kings" with the Canadian dollar worth at that time over 4 Deutsch marks. Cheers.

I'm trying to trace Patrick Gavin who was a starfighter pilot with 420 squadron, I think,(Their motto was 'This arm shall do it')during the mid 60's.He emigrated from England in the 1950's from Burnt Oak near London. When he went to Canada he was adopted so his name may have changed but I hope not.He married an air hostess .I would be grateful if anyone could put me in touch with him.Thank you.

This is great. My Father Alf Payten told me about this web site. He was stationed in Baden from 58-62, 66-71 and from 76-79. I went to Rhine Valley Park Elementary for my elementary years and from Grade 7 to 11 at Baden Senior High. I worked on the Base as a dependent for two years in the late 70's in the C.E., and in Supply. I was back this summer to visit friends. I hadn't really realized how much I missed the area. It was like coming home again. Although the base is being bulldozed for an Air Park, the area is still as beautiful as ever.

I just ran into Scott Apted on this site and made contact. I was in his band Ground Zero and we had a blast.
I was employed in 1 AMS at the PAS building from 86 - 89 in the EW lab with a real unsavory collection of military and civilian co-workers.
We always found time to swim across the little streams next to the Gasthous on the highway to Greffern.

I appreciate the effort people like you have made to
keep good memories alive. I was stationed at the US ASA
Field Station Augsburg by Munich, 1974-1978. A trip to Baden was
like a trip back to the States, especially to go
to your Commissary. I remember the first time I went there,
boy was I homesick. A real "north American" supermarket!
With DM prices! Our US commissary was a pathetic
poorly-stocked warehouse, ugh!
I fell in love with the Twinings Tea, I remember paying
anywhere from 60pfenning to about 2DM per can, imagine
that today!! Lahr's commissary had an even bigger stockpile,
I think I bought about 30 tins of that Twinings tea, and
to this day, yes 1999! I still have some in the basement (the "weird
flavours" such as Lapsong Souchong and Gunpowder Green Tea!!).
We bought a carton of Blueberry ice cream, I will never forget
it, it was so wonderful to find a flavour other than vanilla or
chocolate...we got out to the car and started digging right in!
It would have melted by the time we drove back to Augsburg
anyway!! I hope you all enjoyed going to our US facilities too.
I also fondly remember those tiny Canadian forces license plates,
2 letters and 2 numbers. I still have my US "green" plate and
have it mounted on the front of our car. Sometimes ex GIs
who recognize it leave us "hello" notes.
After serving in Germany, my wife and I moved to the Ottawa
area and lived there for 9 happy years!!
Thanks again for your web page. Hope you had as much fun in
Germany and Europe as I did.

I was with 601 Telecom (Microwave) Sqdn in Marville, Metz, and Lahr from 1964-1968. We used to travel to 4 Wing quite often to visit friends and to party. My brother, Barry Kane (MSE) was there from 1967-70. One of the new CFN staff members at that time was CTV-CFCF sports announcer Ron Rouche. I read through the guestlist and see very few from pre 1970. Maybe we don't have PC's? In any case I really enjoyed the site. Thanks!

Thanks for rekindling warm memories of my most enjoyable posting! I'd like to thank my neighbours at the end of Schwarzwald Str. (Herr Trost's place) in Schwarzach for putting up with the frequent parties that John Fleck and I used to host. There were so many cars at one occasion that the townsfolk gathered at the end of the street thinking the was a beer tent. Oops!
Remember the Singles Club and our "organized" chaos? How about those ski trips to Isgle Austria? The Easter Pig and Toga Night?
There is a small group of 'the gang' that still hang out together and live in Ottawa. We still live life to the fullest!

What a nostalgic trip down memory lane this has been. Thanks Sonya for the flash back. It is nice to see what has happened to our old haunts. This is a great way to find old friends as well as make new ones..

Someone told me I was over there but it's all a blurr... Was in Baden 1984 to 1990 in J79 Engine Bay
and ETF. Is this the Sonja that painted a red arrow on my bald head during an engine bay ski trip?
Jackie worked at the Base Laundromat and then in the Base Exchange until we left to go to Cold Lake.
We had a wonderful time in Baden and would love to hear from anyone else who was there while we were.
Jill went to school grade 3 to 8 and Ryan from kindergarden to grade 5.
Excellent site Sonja.

Hello,
A very happy new Year to all of you.
As you have such a splendid web site we have included a link to you on our web site( http://home.t-online.de/home/Vigier/badhills.htm ).
Additionally we have included a reverence to the founders of our golf club now.
I still have to make an English page, for the moment it's still in German.
Kind regards
:>) George

Wow what a great site to stumble on. I was in Baden from 1983 to 86. I taught at Baden Elementary. I can honestly say they were the best years of my life. I'm a principal now and I was crushed wnen the bases were closed since I had planned to keep reapplying until I could get back! Thanks again for a graet web page.
